Holiness to the Lord: A Guide to the Exposition of the Book of Leviticus Paperback – March 1, 2006
Purchase options and add-ons
In Holiness to the Lord, Allen P. Ross enables preachers and teachers to mine the riches of Leviticus and deliver them to a contemporary audience. Following the same practical method he used in the acclaimed Creation and Blessing, Ross first carefully sites Leviticus within its context in the ancient world. Then he traces the development of God's plan of salvation-how Leviticus' laws, rituals, symbols, and events prepared for the complete revelation in Jesus Christ. Finally, unlike traditional commentaries, Ross offers helpful ideas for correlating Leviticus to New Testament teachings (particularly Romans, Hebrews, and Peter) and for applying the material in relevant expository form.
Holiness to the Lord is every expositor's indispensable guide for interpreting the Law for the church and for elucidating Leviticus in practical, biblical messages about worship, sanctification, and obedience.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2024Helped me think about the laws in Leviticus in a helpful and pastoral light without going way off in the weeds to create the application.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2012First my confession: I, probably like a lot of others, viewed Leviticus as one of the black holes in the Bible--a lot of rules and not much of interest other than for academics. When I read that Rob Bell planted his Mars Hill Church by preaching Leviticus, I was dumbfounded. Now I think I can see how Bell could do that. Ross totally changed my view of Leviticus perhaps most importantly by showing how the New Testament writers used it. Ross always has a New Testament application of Leviticus section, often times it is very gospel oriented. This is worth the price of the book alone. On this note, it gives your Easter sermons so much more depth, not to mention depth to so many other New Testament passages. Outside of Genesis, Ross reveals that Leviticus is the backbone of both the Old an New Testaments--this was a revelation to me. So if you're serious about the Bible, then you have to be serious about the foundation of the Bible--Leviticus.
I first used this commentary as a devotional and then used it to preach the first 16 chapters of Leviticus. Because of Ross, I now view Leviticus as the Gospel in the Old Testament and really appreciate Ross helping me see a new and profound picture of God in a place I never expected to find it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2011People thought I was crazy when I told them I was reading a Leviticus Commentary for fun. But when I started sharing some of the things I was learning they wanted a copy of their own! This book transformed my perspective of Christ's sacrifice and has changed my life. I realize now that we are called to an even higher holiness in response to the magnificent grace of God. Ross unfolds each of the laws, sacrifices, and festivals in a way that transforms what once seemed bizarre to become understandable and beautiful truths. He bridges ancient historical background into contemporary application that you cannot help be called to a higher level of holiness. This is a must have for pastors and teachers and a fantastic devotional read for any Christian. "Holiness to the Lord" shows how Leviticus is paramount to the rest of Scripture and all of faith.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2009I'm one of those who wishes he could have been on that road to Emmaus with Christ after His resurrection, "And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself." (Luke 24.27) With this statement Jesus informs us we shouldn't throw away our Old Testament because it has much to teach us about Him.
I'm a big fan of Allan P. Ross, and this study of Leviticus is great. Normally a neglected book of the Old Testament due to its details over ceremonies and sacrifices, Ross does a great job of bridging the gap of not only showing the significance to Leviticus to its original readers, but also connecting it with the person and ministry of Christ.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2020Just finishing Hope of Glory but I'm sure this one will be rewarding also.
Thank you

- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2014This is well written in that it performs the job of creating very reliable outlines derived from the text. I once had Dr. Ross as a professor.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2017Helps with the understanding of Leviticus which to me is the most difficult book in the Bible.
