"The quality of Creation and Blessing seems to require superlatives. . . . It models the kind of writing that those who teach must give to those who preach to facilitate accurate and rich exposition. Indeed, reading the book is an excellent course in studying and expounding narrative literature."
--Van Campbell, Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society
"Ross has written an excellent study guide to Genesis. His prodigious book, which he refrains from calling a commentary, contains fine scholarship and an excellent survey of previous work on this first book of the Bible. His writing is so interesting that the book became for me more than a source; it became bedside reading material. . . . Ross aims this detailed and lengthy study of Genesis at pastors, teachers, and seminary students who seek to develop an understanding of Genesis and narrative literature in general. He succeeds admirably. . . . For those preaching and writing on Genesis, and for those who love the book as great theology and literature, Ross's work is essential."
--R. G. Branch, Old Testament Essays

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2021If you are looking for a practical, theologically solid commentary on the book of Genesis, this is it. Dr Ross does an excellent job of simplifying the message of the text and breaking each chapter into practical theological truths. While readers may skip right to the commentary on Genesis 1:1, the author does an exceptional job of explaining the various textual criticisms of Genesis and explain how and why Genesis is best understood as "a special kind of history...[that] records past events for the purpose of educating people spiritually." The final product provides a "theological shaping of the reports and traditions for the instruction of Israel..." From this perspective the author provides historical and theological commentary on each chapter in a practical and easily understandable manner. This is one of the more understandable and practical commentaries on Genesis that I have ever read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2022I've found this to be a helpful commentary. Great for a pastor preparing to preach sermons.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2016Best commentary I have ever read. Recommended to me by a member of the Holman Bible translation team who was also a seminary professor. I've been using it to put together lessons for a youth group and they're on the edge of their seats. The perspective it gives on the Israelite point of view and the implications for then and now are astonishing, and I look forward to studying the material much more than ever before. Everyone should have and love this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2010Ross does a first rate job in this unique commentary intended especially for pastors and teachers. The book is divided into four main sections with individual pericopes identified in each. Ross gives insightful commentary and workable expository ideas helpful for preparing sermons/lessons from the book. He also keeps you focused with one main expository idea for each passage, with each main point fleshing out that main idea. I can't stress enough what a great help this book is. I wish Ross had these commentaries for the whole OT.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2013I am still wading through this book. Many good concepts and guides for studying Genesis.
You will want to take your time with this book, it requires some thought.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2020In a day and age of rampant ignorance about our Creator, this book clearly gives a wonderful on-site into His creation.
